After reviewing the meetings of our local governement over the course of the last couple years, I noticed that many people commented on what our future generations will be dealing with in regards to the decisions that are made now. However, we are not hearing from the future generation. This is something I would like to see changed and have a vision in mind for it to be realized.
If elected, I will work towards developing an advisory committee comprised of local high school youths. The structure I have in mind would be as follows:
-One youth form each high school in the county, while meeting the criteria set by their school and with parental permission, would be elected by the student body to represent the youth of that school. This would be known as the Marshall County Youth Council (MCYC).
- These youth would meet once a month to communicate concerns and ideas that there pears bring to their attention. These meetings would be supervised by a member of the Commissioners as well as a member of the County Council, preferably one Republican and one Democrat, who would advise on procedures and mediate as needed.
-At least twice during the school year one of the members of the MCYC and selected by the MCYC would provide a presentation to both the County Council and County Commissioners with the idea in mind to inform both governmental bodies on the concerns our youth have and what path they would like to see the county follow.
-Each youth who serves on this council would be presented with a letter of acknowledgement showing that they served on the MCYC. This letter would be an additional beneficial tool that they could use for things such as college application letters and job resumes.
Of course, the outline of what I would propose may change. However, enacting such a council could only benefit the county. It would also drive up our youths interest in local politics and help more people to understand the importance local politics plays on each person's daily lives.
