Any leader should have the ability to try to see issues before they arise. As commissioner this will be vital in order to protect the county. For instance, as a regular citizen I have seen official actions that may very well lead to future, costly litigation that the tax payers will have pay for. One prime example is the opening prayer invocation at the county council meetings.
Due to constitutional issues this may very well lead to litigation. While SCOTUS has ruled that municipal and county councils may legally hold prayer at the beginning of their meetings, it is not outside the realm of possibility that this will be challenged again under a different set of justices. After the overturning of Roe v. Wade, we have seen that it is possible that SCOTUS may overturn its own previous judgments. Another consideration on this issue is a recent Michigan lawsuit involving Ottawa County. In this lawsuit, Ottawa County was accused of not allowing any faiths, other than Christian, to lead the opening invocation. This resulted in Ottawa county having to allow a member of the Church of Satan to lead the Invocation. It is very possible that Marshall County may face a similar situation which could result in costing the county money that should not have to be spent AND having to allow less common belief systems be represented.
As a Christian myself, I understand the importance of a prayer life. However, government should not favor one faith over another nor should it be influenced by any faith as government is meant to represent all the people. This includes those of different faiths or no faith at all.
